Pregnant Gloucester Woman Killed In Maine Snowmobile Crash

GREENWOOD, Maine (CBS/AP) - A pregnant Gloucester woman was killed in a snowmobile crash in Maine Saturday morning.

Elizabeth Abelson, 30, was snowmobiling on a trail in Greenwood with her husband at 11 a.m. when she lost control, was ejected from the snowmobile and collided with trees, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Both Abelson and her child, which was due in early March, were pronounced dead at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Maine.

Abelson's husband Stuart was also riding the snowmobile. Authorities did not say if he was injured in the crash.

Stuart Abelson is the president and CEO of Ora, Inc., an ophthalmology research company in Andover.

"The family appreciates your respect and distance as they grieve Betsy's passing and cherish the memories they made and the life she lived," the company said in a statement Sunday.

The crash is under investigation.
