Electronic Tolling Testing Underway On Tobin Bridge

BOSTON (CBS) - Drivers on the Tobin Bridge may notice a change with the toll collection system in the coming days.

MassDOT says the initial testing of the new All Electronic Tolling is underway. Currently, cameras are capturing license plate images, which will allow MassDOT to bill vehicle owners who do not have an E-ZPass transponder. Officials are working to limit the intensity of the flash during the initial phase. They'll be testing image clarity and checking to make sure the system runs properly.

Their goal is to identify any issues and make corrections in advance of the permanent installation, which is expected to happen this summer. At that point, drivers will no longer stop or slow down to pay their Tobin Bridge toll. Drivers without EZ Pass will receive their bill in the mail.

The DOT is also holding EZ Pass sign-ups at the Chelsea Market Basket, 160 Everett Ave on the following days:

• Friday, June 6 from 11am to 5pm
• Saturday, June 7 from 10am to 4pm
• Monday, June 9 thru Friday, June 13 from 11am to 5pm
• Saturday, June 14 from 10am to 4pm
