E-Rod Loses No-Hit Bid After Video Review Overturns Call
BOSTON (CBS) -- Eduardo Rodriguez continued his resurgent post-All-Star Break run for the Red Sox in Oakland on Sunday, but his start didn't come without a little intrigue - and potential controversy.
Rodriguez allowed just one hit to the Oakland Athletics in eight shutout innings Sunday, mixing in two walks. The lone hit was an infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning by the As' Marcus Semien, who smacked a grounder in E-Rod's direction. Rodriguez booted the ball before throwing the ball to first base, where Semien was initially ruled out.
HD replays showed that Semien's foot clearly reached first base before the ball, proving that he was actually safe and had broken up Rodriguez's no-hit bid. Umpires overturned the initial call after a brief review. Watch the play unfold in a clip at MLB.com.
Without replay reviews, the footage may have still shown that Semien was safe and would have caused an ensuing no-hitter to be smothered in controversy. The Red Sox eventually lost 1-0 on a walk-off double by Khris Davis, who benefitted from an error by left fielder Brock Holt.
Despite the no-decision and the team's tough-luck loss on Sunday, Rodriguez continued his outstanding run since being re-inserted into the Red Sox rotation. He is just 1-3 but has compiled a 2.73 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 52.2 innings. He has allowed more than three earned runs in just one of nine starts since July 16.
