Ed Davis To Review Handling Of 'Blarney Blowout' At UMass Amherst

BOSTON (CBS) - UMass Amherst has retained WBZ-TV Security Analyst Ed Davis to help them crack down on out of control parties.

UMass Amherst is asking the former Boston Police Commissioner to conduct a comprehensive review of the university and the town's handling of the Blarney Blowout.

This weekend, campus and town police arrested more than 50 people who attended the off-campus pre St. Patrick's Day party that started Saturday and ran into Sunday morning. Eight others were summonsed to court for criminal offenses.

UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy believes Davis' experience could help them prevent it from happening again.

"Commissioner Davis is an outstanding choice for this assignment," Subbaswamy said. "He is regarded as one of the country's top law enforcement experts and he will draw upon his longtime success in community policing to help us prevent a recurrence of last week's disturbing events. This initiative has the support of our community partners in Amherst town government, a cooperative approach vital to solving this difficult problem."

Davis has 36 years of law enforcement experience, and was Boston Police commissioner from 2006-13.
