Duck Boat Crashes Into Storrow Drive Overpass

BOSTON (CBS) -- Part of the roof of a Boston Duck Boat tore off on Sunday while trying to pass under an overpass on Storrow Drive.

Fire officials say 20 people were on board the tour boat travelling eastbound on Storrow Drive when it struck the overpass near the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. The crash peeled back the tour boat's canopy and damaged the ladder.

A driver who passed the boat captured the scene on his cell phone.

The duck boat drove to Leverett Circle where firefighters used a department ladder to evacuate passengers.

No one was hurt. The passengers were put into another duck boat to resume the tour.

It's unclear why the boat was on Storrow Drive.

According to Boston Duck Boats, the tour boat was diverted from its standard route because Beacon Hill was closed.

"Duck Boats do not typically travel on Storrow Drive and the driver's actions, although not intentional, will be under review by company safety experts who will conduct a thorough analysis of this event," Boston Duck Boats spokesman Joe Baerlein said in a public statement.

Police are also investigating the circumstances of the crash.
