Alleged Drunk Driver Ejected From SUV After High-Speed Mansfield Crash

MANSFIELD (CBS) -- An alleged drunk driver was seriously hurt after being ejected from his SUV following a high-speed crash in Mansfield early Wednesday morning.

John Pucci, 25, of North Attleboro has been charged with three counts of failing to stop at a red light, two counts of reckless operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of liquor, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, failing to stop for police, speeding, marked lanes violation, open contain of alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle on a public way, and possession of a class B drug (cocaine) with intent to distribute.

The chase started when a police officer saw Pucci allegedly run a red light in his black SUV at the intersection of Chauncy and North Main Street shortly after 1 a.m., according to the Mansfield Police Facebook page.

When the officer attempted to stop Pucci, he turned onto Pratt Street (Route 106 East) and sped away, police say.

At one point, police say Pucci was traveling nearly 100 miles per hour in both lanes while running a red light at the intersection of Hope and Pratt streets.

While driving by the Mansfield DPW garage, Pucci allegedly tossed something out of the SUV before losing control and hitting a guardrail at the Canoe River bridge.

The SUV flipped end-over-end and split into three sections, police said. First responders found Pucci seriously hurt after becoming pinned between the bridge and a drainage pipe.

Pucci was flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries. His current condition is unknown.

No other victims were found at the seen, police say.

The road was shut down for about five hours while police officers investigated.
