Dorchester Hardware Store Closing After 92 Years In Business

DORCHESTER (CBS) – A fixture in Dorchester for the past 92 years is closing its doors for good on Wednesday.

Hamilton Hardware has been in the same location, surviving the Great Depression and numerous recessions.

But owners since 1979, Mark and Paul O'Brien say this bittersweet day was bound to come eventually.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports

"We have a lot of very, very good customers. And we've been very fortunate to be here as long as we have," Mark said. "We've held out as long as we could. And we just – with the economy and everything the way that it is – we couldn't sustain any longer."

The store is being replaced with a Dollar Tree Store.

Mark O'Brien says he doesn't know what he'll do next, but he's pretty certain that he'll work less than the 12-hour days that he's been putting in over the past three decades.
