Donations Sought After Fire Displaces 6 Lawrence Families

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- The mayor of Lawrence is making an appeal to help six families displaced by an apartment fire last week.

The early morning blaze in an Elm Street apartment building on April 2 didn't injure anyone, but 31 people were displaced. The fire chief said the owner was doing work in a first-floor bathroom with a plumber's torch and that somehow started the fire.

"Our hearts are with the families and the City stands ready to support them in all that they need to get through this difficult time," Mayor Dan Rivera said in a statement. "In total, six families have been displaced and they are all in need of our love and support."
