Police: Man Arrested For Attacking State Police Trooper During Traffic Stop

RANDOLPH, Mass. (AP) — A driver stopped by a Massachusetts state police trooper punched the officer in the face and pushed his head into the pavement during a violent struggle, police said.

Police said the trooper clocked the driver traveling at 81 miles an hour in a 55-mph zone in Randolph early Saturday.

The driver refused to leave his car, punched the trooper and reached toward the center console, police said. The trooper, fearing the driver could be retrieving a weapon, pulled him out.

Police said the driver repeatedly struck the trooper before tackling him to the ground and driving his face into the pavement. At one point, the trooper was pushed into the path of an oncoming vehicle; that driver was able to get out of the way, police said.

Police said an off-duty state trooper saw what was happening and pulled over. The driver got back into his car and speeded away; the injured trooper pursued him. Other police responded. The car was later found abandoned and officers found the driver.

Devin Fuller, 29, of Boston, was charged with assault with intent to murder, failure to stop for police, and narcotics possession, among other charges.

He was jailed on $50,000 cash bail and faced arraignment Monday. It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer. A number couldn't be found for him.

The trooper was treated at a hospital.
