Decoy Boxes Help Catch Accused Salem Package Thief

SALEM (CBS) – On Salem streets lit up and bright, police say a Grinch struck more than once or twice.

"That's cold. That's very cold," said David Cram, who is one of several people who had packages stolen from their porch or entryway. "I was very upset."

Salem police said a package thief struck a few doors down from Cram on West Ave.

According to a police report, two men in the West Ave. building put out a fake package. The men then watched as Tina White, who lives in the neighborhood, allegedly stole the box.

Police arrested White, who they said has a long criminal record that includes theft.

"It was clever, and I'll give the guy a little tip of the hat for helping us with that," police told WBZ-TV about the sting.

Salem police said they found stolen items in White's room. The packages were from three homes, including the daughter of the police chief.

"I'd like to shake their hand," Cram said of the men who helped track down the suspected thief.

White is being held on $5,000 cash bail. Officers said the bail is that high because of White's lengthy criminal history.
