Davis: William Evans 'Tremendous Choice' As Boston Police Commissioner
BOSTON (CBS) – Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said the selection of William Evans as the next commissioner is a "tremendous choice."
Evans is a 31-year veteran of the department and has been serving as interim police commissioner since Davis stepped down November 1.
The formal announcement will come Thursday.
"I think it's a tremendous selection," Davis told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens Wednesday.
"Bill is one of the best respected command officers in the police department, comes from a really well-known and legendary police family, as his brother (Paul) ran the department for many years. Bill is just a great choice. I really applaud the mayor's decision here."
Davis said Evans brought "tenacity and a sense of calm" during the Boston Marathon bombings investigation last April.
"He really did some heroic things that day. He really is a tremendous choice," Davis said.
"He'll be great. Bill has a great family that will support him through what is a very difficult and demanding job. But he is a tireless worker. He's up at four o'clock in the morning, he's out running ten miles before most of us are out of bed. He is really knowledgeable of the day-to-day operations of the police department. He reads every report, pays close attention to all the details"
"I think that he's well suited for this position. I really anticipate that the city of Boston is in very good hands here."
