David Ortiz Wins Edgar Martinez Award For Outstanding DH

BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Sox Nation might have preferred that David Ortiz had a chance at the American League MVP award, but it will have to settle for this. Big Papi has won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award for the eighth time in his career, after delivering perhaps the most prolific final season in baseball history.

Ortiz batted .315 with 38 home runs and 127 RBIs, while leading the AL in doubles (48), slugging (.620), and OPS (1.021), making him a shoo-in for the award.

The Outstanding Designated Hitter Award has been around since the DH was introduced in 1973. Edgar Martinez won the award five times in his career with the Seattle Mariners before it was renamed in his honor in 2004.

So now that Ortiz has won the award eight times, maybe it's time to reconsider the name.
