4-Year-Old Girl Found Dead After Wandering Away From Danvers Home

DANVERS (CBS) – A 4-year-old girl who wandered away from her home was found dead Sunday in water along a Danvers riverbank.

Danvers Police were called to River Drive after the girl was reported missing around 12:15 p.m.

Officers found the girl submerged in the water of the Crane River. An officer began CPR and EMTs arrived at the scene a short time later.

The girl was rushed to Beverly Hospital but did not survive.

Barbara Murkison lives nearby. "There were people out here, the harbormaster and the police and everybody trying to revive her. She looks limp, she wasn't moving or anything," she said.

Her husband witnessed more. "He's really distraught right now," Murkison said. "He did say one of the police officers lost it and you could see he broke down. The father was here and he broke down."

Danvers Police and State Police assigned to the Essex District Attorney's office are investigating the girl's death. It appears to be accidental.
