Damage More Than $1 Million In Fatal Roxbury Fire

BOSTON (CBS) – Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of a Friday night fire that killed one person and left one firefighter hospitalized.

One man was killed and more than 30 residents were displaced after the fire that broke out after 9 p.m. Friday at a Winthrop Street duplex.

According to the Boston Fire Department, one firefighter was treated on scene and transported to an area hospital by ambulance to be evaluated for a heart condition.

Firefighters remained at the scene overnight into Saturday morning monitoring hot spots.

Boston fire officials said that, as is standard in fatal fires, there will be a joint investigation between the Boston Fire Department, Boston police homicide unit and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

A press official from the District Attorney's office said on Saturday afternoon that the cause of the fire remained undetermined. It is not yet clear if the fire was suspicious in nature.

The identity of the man killed has not yet been released.

Damage from the fire is estimated at over $1 million.
