Daily Talker: What Should Be Done To Stop Gun Violence?
A 14-year-old boy from Mattapan charged in the deadly shooting of his 9-year-old brother will be in court on Monday. Police say the teenager, whose name is not being released because of his age, was playing with a gun Friday morning when it accidentally fired.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says he's working on a gun buyback program to try to get more weapons off the streets, but he admits it's only a short-term solution.
"We're talking about thousands of guns that have been confiscated right here in the City of Boston," said Walsh. "The fact that a 14-year-old had a gun, there's something wrong with that."
But some experts question whether gun buy-backs actually work. A Harvard University study done in the mid-1990s found they didn't get the right kinds of weapons off the street to reduce crime, but supporters say they do raise awareness and help get the community involved.
