The United States was seconds away from earning a berth in the knockout stage at World Cup, clinging to a 2-1 lead deep into injury time against Portugal.

But the Americans had to settle for a 2-2 tie as Varela scored on a header in the fifth extra minute to keep Portugal alive in the tournament.

"It's heartbreaking, absolutely gutwrenching," said fan Nick Grassi after the match.

The US can still advance past the group stage with a win or a draw versus Germany on Thursday.
