Daily Talker: Harvard Experts Take On Dangerously Thin Models
Harvard researchers taking on fashion models. They are calling for a ban on dangerously thin models from runway shows and fashion shoots. The experts from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health say that ban could prevent serious health problems, like anorexia and death from starvation, in young women.
They noted in an editorial published in the American Journal of Public Health that the average runway model's BMI is below the World Health Organization's threshold for medically dangerous thinness in adults. The Harvard experts are now calling on OSHA to set regulations to prohibit the hiring of models below a given body mass index.
Last week, France's National Assembly passed a law requiring models working in the country to provide a medical certificate about their overall health. Modeling agencies and fashion houses that do not follow the new law could face a fine of about $81,000 or imprisonment.
What do you think? Should dangerously thin models be banned? Will that help prevent eating disorders?
