Daily Talker: Hancock Tower Name Change

New England's tallest building is getting a name change, but it's not clear whether Bostonians will play along.

The owners of the 60-story, 790-foot-tall John Hancock Tower in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood said Thursday that they can no longer use the name, because financial services company John Hancock is no longer a tenant.

The building's owner, Boston Properties, has renamed it "200 Clarendon" after its street address.

But Boston Properties President Doug Linde and other company officials kept calling it the Hancock Tower during a conference call Thursday. It remains to be seen if Bostonians and others familiar with the city will welcome the new name.

John Hancock, a subsidiary of Toronto-based Manulife Financial Corp., built the glass tower in 1976. Its lease for the building expired earlier this year.

Will you call the Hancock Tower by its new name, "200 Clarendon"?
