Daily Talker: Fireworks Show Moved Because Of Arthur Threat

Because of the threat from Tropical Storm Arthur, Boston will be celebrating the 4th of July a day early.

Organizers of the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular are moving the show along the Esplanade to tonight. It's the first time since 1992 that the festivities have been rescheduled. Performer schedules and contracts are preventing the show being moved to Saturday.

That means despite today being a business day, Storrow Drive will be shut down at Noon and other roads and bridges on the Charles River will close at 6 p.m. Security checkpoints at the Oval will open to the public at 5 p.m.

Weather could mean more schedule adjustments, including the possibility of delaying the fireworks show to Saturday.

"The rain is a factor for the orchestra. If the rain is coming down hard enough that it comes into the hatch shell, it affects your instruments. These instruments are valuable and old," event organizer Rich McDonald said. "For the fireworks, we have a sustained wind of 20 mph, which is pretty hard. That's when we cannot fire by law the fireworks."
