Daily Talker: Could Cape Cod Shark Pamphlet Hurt Tourism?

The front cover shows a toothy Great White Shark, and inside says not to swim too far off-shore, and don't go swimming if seals are present. But some say a brochure designed to warn tourists about sharks off Cape Cod goes too far.

"The cover has an extra-mean, toothy picture of a shark," Richard Delaney of the Center for Coastal Studies told the Cape Cod Times. "It's one more example of how we, as a society, have this general myth that these guys are big, nasty creatures."

More than 400,000 of the brochures were printed as part of a campaign to raise awareness of sharks, and to educate beachgoers what to do and what not to do in case of a sighting.

But there is some concern the campaign could hurt tourism.

"Information is good. It's the tone and tenor of the information that you put out to the public to keep them aware, keep them safe," said Wendy Northcross of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

What's your reaction to the pamphlet? Should the information have been presented in a different way? Share your comments below and watch for them on WBZ News in the Morning from 4:30 to 7:00 a.m.
