Daily Talker: Changing School Mascots
Local schools are taking a closer look at their mascots and what they represent. Amherst College trustees voted to drop their unofficial mascot, Lord Jeff, because of his negative historical connotations. The mascot is named for 18th century British Gen. Jeffrey Amherst. Amherst was the commander of the British Forces in North America during the French and Indian War. He was known for suggesting a plan to deliver small pox-infected blankets to Native Americans. The trustees said a mascot's job is to unify, but this one was driving people apart.
Tonight a public forum will be held to discuss whether it's time to change Tewksbury Memorial High School's mascot – the Redmen. The image shows a Native American in a feathered headdress. Some say they are uncomfortable with this mascot. Supporters rallying behind it have started a Facebook group called "REDMEN… HERE TO STAY." They plan to wear their Redmen gear to tonight's meeting.
