Daily Talker: $40 Million Requested To Renovate Chambers At State House

Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo is defending a plan to spend up to $20 million on upgrades to the House chambers.

"We've got a lot of repairs that need to be done, anywhere from the roof to the floor," DeLeo told the Boston Globe. He also says wiring and flooring issues need to be fixed.

DeLeo's comments come after Senate leaders announced a $20 million renovation plan for their chambers. Problems they say need to be fixed include damaged cornices and pieces falling fro the ceiling.

Earlier this week, Gov. Deval Patrick said lawmakers have a responsibility to maintain the State House, since it is a historic landmark that draws thousands of tourists each year and because it is the seat of government. Patrick's own office is getting a $9 million overhaul.

What do you think of all these renovation plans? Is it worth the money, or should it be spent elsewhere? Share your comments below, and watch for them on WBZ News in the Morning from 4:30 to 7:00 a.m.
