Curley School In Jamaica Plain Closing For 10 Days Because Of COVID Outbreak
BOSTON (CBS) – Students at the Curley School in Jamaica Plain won't return to the classroom for at least ten days following a COVID-19 outbreak.
Boston Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said 46 students tested positive since October 22, prompting the temporary closure.
"The Curley School is experiencing a recent increase in positive cases of COVID-19 in multiple grade levels and classrooms and what's most concerning is that it's happening in such a short period of time," she said.
One parent told WBZ-TV that switching to remote learning is the best move to stop the spread. "I think it's a safe thing to do that put's everyone's minds at ease," said Leena Ismail.
But not every parent agrees with the sudden shift. It's an inconvenience for some families who are now scrambling to find childcare for the next two weeks.
"I know a lot of families who can't just take their kids out of school for 10 days without having repercussions from their employment for example," said another Curley School parent.
Word of the outbreak is why the Whited family brought their youngest to get vaccinated Tuesday morning.
"It was a couple hours, which we weren't planning on," said Soren Whited after waiting in line for the shot. His 7-year old, Adriana, is a second grader at the Curley School.
The switch to at-home learning is also tough on students now forced to learn from a screen again.
"It's going to be quite difficult, but it's going to be safe," said Justice Wiggins.
Students can return to the Curley School on Monday, November 22.
