Community Mourns Medway Teen Killed In Car Crash

MEDWAY (CBS/AP) — Friends and family gathered Sunday evening to mourn the death of Medway High School senior Madeline "Maddy" Lamson.

The 17-year-old was killed late Friday after her car slammed into a tree in nearby Franklin.

School officials Sunday said Lamson -- a 3-sport athlete -- was a smart and determined young woman, and had hoped to continue playing lacrosse and field hockey in college, as she did for her high school team.

Mary Ellen Hasenfuss, Lamson's field hockey coach, called the teen, "one of the most amazing women I have ever coached."

"My heart is just broken that we've lost her so young, and my team is devastated," Hasenfuss told WBZ-TV.

The tragedy left everyone who knew her in shock.

"I went downstairs and talked to my mom and she talked to me about it because she got an email, and it wasn't real, it didn't feel real," friend Lea Guarino said.

Franklin police say Lamson's car crashed at around 11:30 p.m. Friday on Lincoln Street. They said bystanders tried to pull Lamson from the car, but were forced back when the car caught fire.

A makeshift memorial has been set up at the tree.
