Woman And Her Dog Struck On Commonwealth Ave In Newton

NEWTON (CBS) -- A woman and her dog were hit by an SUV Thursday morning, the Newton Fire Department said.

The crash happened around 8:20 a.m. during the busy early-morning commute, while the woman and her dog were crossing Commonwealth Avenue near Islington Road in Newton.

The woman was taken to Lahey Hospital. The extent of her injuries was not yet known.

The driver of the white Mercedes SUV stayed on the scene. The SUV had damage to its front left side.

Part of Commonwealth Ave was blocked off as a result of the crash.

Police spent hours marking evidence, talking to witnesses, and reconstructing the accident, at one point even driving the SUV up and down a section of Commonwealth Ave to test its brakes before eventually towing it away.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
