Social Media Had A Field Day With The Colts' Infamously Bad Fake Punt Attempt
By Matt Dolloff (@mattdolloff)
BOSTON (CBS) -- There are ill-advised play calls. There are botched plays. And then there's what the Colts did on Sunday Night Football against the Patriots.
Trailing by just 6 points with one minute left in the third quarter, the Colts lined up to punt on 4th and 3 before the punting unit wildly shifted their formation, moving the entire right side of the line of scrimmage to the right side of the field and leaving just receiver Griff Whalen and safety Colt Anderson in the middle of the field with the ball. Then, Whalen inexplicably snapped the ball to de facto "quarterback" Anderson who was immediately tackled by the several Patriots defenders lined up right on him.

The play left announcers speechless, pundits stunned and fans dumbfounded. NBC commentators Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth at one point just broke into laughter watching the replay. Even if the play somehow worked, it drew an illegal formation penalty because "the entire right side of the line was off the line of scrimmage." Yeah, doesn't sound legal.
Worst of all for the Colts, the Patriots capitalized on their mistake and rode their great field position to an easy touchdown from Tom Brady to LeGarrette Blount. That swing extended the Patriots' lead to 34-21 and the Colts never recovered.
An instant classic sports blooper, the Colts' fake punt attempt immediately lit up social media as viewers teed off on what will go down as the worst trick play in NFL history, and perhaps the worst play of any kind.
Resident "cheat beat" veteran Michael Hurley exploded with disbelief and went on an epic rant.
WORST PLAY IN NFL HISTORY!

WORST PLAY IN NFL HISTORY!
WORST PLAY IN NFL HISTORY!!

— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
THEY GOT CALLED FOR A PENALTY!
WHILE RUNNING THE WORST PLAY IN NFL HISTORY!
I AM DEAD.
RIP TO ME.
I now understand why Chuck Pagano cried after squeaking past Tennessee. I feel like a lot of things on the football field might amaze him.
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
Chuck Pagano has some nerve to clap at his team to encourage them after that. Seriously.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Colts ran the worst play in NFL history.

I'm sorry I just don't know how tomorrow is spent discussing anything other than the Colts' "fake punt."
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
.@POTUS When are you making an official statement on the Colts' fake punt?
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
Not going to sleep tonight. Where is it the middle of the day? Australia? I might call a stranger and explain the Colts' fake punt.
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
.@ESPNU Can you run the fake punt on loop for 24 hours starting at 5 am tomorrow?
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
And then the memes came flying in.
This is how that fake punt by the Colts should have been ran, man. This has first down written all over it. pic.twitter.com/d4TWbC3wfh

Once it became apparent that the Patriots wouldn't get the blowout fans so desired, the Colts took care of the embarrassment themselves. And plenty of viewers just reveled in the utter schadenfreude of the Colts' epic fail.
Laughing uncontrollably in colts fans faces after that trick play may be the highlight of my life. Almost better than Super Bowl
— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) October 19, 2015
Does that play have a nickname yet? The immaculate deception? The bumblerooskie? The snap Mary?
— Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) October 19, 2015
Yeah we're not gonna blow the Colts out but that made up for all of it. What a time to be alive.
— feitelberg (@FeitsBarstool) October 19, 2015
I'm now dumber for watching the @Colts try to outsmart the @Patriots. ???? #SNF #INDvNE
— Taylor Twellman (@TaylorTwellman) October 19, 2015
Colts defense had actually done a decent job keeping this game close before it got hosed by that bizarre playcall.
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) October 19, 2015
Colts would have to think about NOT use the illegal formation on fake punt next week. #MysteryGateGame
— Matthew Mihaleas (@MatthewMihaleas) October 19, 2015
I still think that fake punt could have worked if there wasn't one guy blocking 5 Patriots.
— Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) October 19, 2015
I wonder what type of banner the Colts will raise after this one.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) October 19, 2015
A new banner? Well here's your answer, Jeff:
Colts gonna raise a new banner post game. #NFL #Football pic.twitter.com/JLhWOBIixK

Even as the game came to an end, people simply could not comprehend what the Colts were doing with the fake punt attempt.
Can't believe the Patriots didn't cover. Truly can't believe it.
— Michael Hurley (@michaelFhurley) October 19, 2015
BUT NOT AS MUCH AS I CAN'T BELIEVE THE COLTS' FAKE PUNT PLAY.
Also Colts fans are defending this by saying "hey we didn't get blown out" absolutely hilarious
— Steve Bastek (@HansVermit) October 19, 2015
And of course, some couldn't resist but make more cheating jokes.
The #Patriots are currently being investigated for cheating when they forced the #Colts to snap the ball on the fake punt #fakepuntgate

All in all, it was a strong night for sports memes, thanks to one horrifically dumb play that will overshadow what was otherwise an entertaining and competitive game. The Patriots earned the win and for at least two-and-a-half quarters, the Colts played well.
One mistake changed all that, and changed sports blooper highlights forever.
