Coast Guard Medically Evacuates Cruise Ship Passenger

BOSTON (CBS) – The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 69-year-old woman off a cruise ship 56 miles south of Nantucket Sunday.

The woman was suffering from "possible internal injuries" on the Norwegian Gem, and a medical evacuation was requested.

The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter reached the ship at about 11 a.m., and hoisted the woman from the deck.

She's being treated at Cape Cod Hospital.

"Visibility was limited due to the weather, but thanks to the professionalism of the Norwegian Gem's crew the medevac was a success." said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Scott Higbee.

The rescue came just hours after a Coast Guard helicopter rescued a fisherman who was having trouble breathing about 50 miles east of Chatham.
