Chocolate Is Good For The Brain, New Study Finds

ORONO, MAINE (CBS) -- This news should make just about everybody happy.

A recent study published in the scientific journal Appetite says chocolate is good for the brain.

Researchers say it's long been known that chocolate can have benefits for your heart, but little is known about its effect on the mind.

The new study of nearly 1,000 people between the ages of 23 and 98 revealed sweet news for chocolate lovers.

"More frequent chocolate consumption was significantly associated with better performance on the Global Composite score, Visual-Spatial Memory and Organization, Working Memory, Scanning and Tracking, Abstract Reasoning, and the Mini-Mental State Examination," said the research team, which included scientists from the University of Maine.

Earlier this year, one expert said chocolate is the best cure for a cough.

It will be important to figure out just how much chocolate is needed to reap the health benefits, researchers noted.
