4-year-old girl dies after being hit by car in South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON - A young girl was hit and killed by a car Sunday evening in South Boston.

It happened at the intersection of Congress and Sleeper streets at 5:06 p.m. Police said the 4-year-old girl, who was with family at the time, was taken to Mass General, where she died.

"It's very, very tough to hear," said South Boston resident Joseph Alibali.

Police investigated the scene, collected evidence and interviewed the driver involved but no arrests were made. Neighbors who live nearby called it a horrible accident.

"I just heard abnormal screams coming from this area here and I came down to see. That's all I heard, then I heard some sirens a couple minutes later," said Alibali.

According to police, it's unclear what led up to the accident but the Boston Children's Museum is only steps away.

"It was chaos, I don't know how many police officers were here," said Kimberly Harris. "Lights were everywhere, they put the tape up quickly, helicopters flying overhead, it was crazy." Harris said she's heartbroken for the family now grieving their little girl. "I mean, it's terrible, it's awful, I can't even imagine."

Museum president and CEO Carole Charnow said in a statement on Monday that the little girl's death is devastating.

"We know that there continue to be issues with this intersection of Congress Street and Sleeper Street that are related to speed and site lines," Charnow said. "While we know that there are plans in the works to permanently address this issue, we hope that something can be done right away to ensure pedestrian safety."

Police towed a truck away from the area that was outlined with evidence markers though it's unclear if it was involved.
