Child Drowns In Methuen, Firefighter Hurt In Rescue Attempt

METHUEN (CBS) -- A 5-year-old child has drowned in Methuen, police said.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a missing child at a Russell Street home shortly after noon on Sunday. The child was found in the family's backyard pool that hadn't been used in years. Police said the child left the house and stepped onto the cover and fell into the murky waters.

The child was being watched by a 15-year-old babysitter.

A firefighter was injured trying to rescue the child, police said. He's being treated at a hospital.
