16-Year-Old Dies After Being Pulled From Lake Gardner In Amesbury

AMESBURY (CBS) – A 16-year-old boy who was pulled from Lake Gardner in Amesbury on Sunday died at an area hospital several hours later.

The boy was pulled from the water Sunday around 4 p.m. He was not from Massachusetts and was visiting his uncle in Lynn.

Amesbury Police officer Ronnie Guilmette was the first one to rush into the water, followed by firefighters Justin Petrillo, Sean Kane and TJ Poussard.

Guilmette found the boy and brought him back to shore without a pulse. Paramedics began performing CPR on the teenager and were able to establish a pulse.

He was rushed to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, then transferred to a Boston hospital by MedFlight.

Several hours later, the boy was pronounced dead.

Lake Gardner Beach will remain closed for several days while police investigate the incident.

"It's tragic to have something like this happen, and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man," said Amesbury Mayor Kassandra Gove. "Our chiefs confirmed that a summertime water rescue hasn't happened at Lake Gardner Beach in decades, though they are trained for them. I want to thank our Police and Fire Departments for everything they did to try and save the boy. This is not the outcome we wanted, but they deserve a lot of credit for going above and beyond in the call of duty. Officer Ronnie Guilmette put his own life in danger to search for the boy and didn't think twice about it. Thank you to both teams for your efforts."
