Chelsea Police: Hit & Run Driver 'Panicked' After Victim Dropped Gun

CHELSEA (CBS) – The driver involved in a hit and run in Chelsea told police he fled the scene because he "panicked" when he saw the victim drop a gun.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, was struck by a pickup truck in the crosswalk at Broadway and Everett Ave at about 4 p.m.

Chelsea Police released video of the incident after the truck fled the scene. About two hours later, police said the driver came forward.

"The Victim had a License to Carry and the gun he was legally carrying became dislodged when he was struck," Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said. "The operator saw the gun on the street and panicked and fled the scene as a result."

The victim was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not said if charges have been filed against the driver who left the scene.
