1 Killed, 4 Injured In Chelmsford 2-Car Crash

CHELMSFORD (CBS) -- One person was killed and four were injured in a two-car accident on Route 3 in Chelmsford early Sunday morning.

Massachusetts State Police said a 34-year-old woman was killed in the crash, which happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday north of Route 495 on Route 3. She was pronounced dead at Lahey Hospital in Burlington.

Police said that woman was driving a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer northbound on Route 3 when it was hit from behind by a 2008 Jeep Liberty, causing it to roll and eject her and two of her three passengers.

One passenger from that car, a Westmoreland, N.H. woman, is in critical condition at Lahey Hospital. A 27-year-old woman in the Mercury was taken to Tufts Medical Center in Boston with non-life-threatening injuries, and the third passenger, a 31-year-old Keene, N.H. man, was taken to Lowell General Hospital with minor injuries. The Jeep driver, a 45-year-old Nashua man, was also taken to Tufts with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mass. State Police closed Route 3 North for about 4 1/2 hours. The crash is currently under investigation, and no charges have yet been filed.
