CBS News Follows Heroin Addict From Needham As He Searches For Sobriety

BOSTON (CBS) - Four people in Massachusetts die every day from an overdose. CBS News is putting a face on the opioid crisis with "Jason's Journey."

Cameras are following Jason Amaral, a local man addicted to heroin as he searches for sobriety.

"Your eyes open, you think about heroin," Amaral said. "Nothing else, nothing else!"

His hunt for heroin began at 7:30 in the morning on a brisk day in downtown Boston. He allowed CBS News cameras to follow him as he tried to get money to get high.

Amaral's life wasn't always like this. He grew up in Needham, Massachusetts with his younger brother raised by a single mother. But when Jason was only eleven his mom died of cancer.

In college, Jason started experimenting with the pricey painkiller OxyContin which soon led to heroin. And so began the life of an addict.
