Carson Smith To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

BOSTON (CBS) -- Relief pitcher Carson Smith's first season with the Red Sox is already officially over.

The team announced that the right-hander will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.

The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Altchek in New York.

Smith, 26, was traded to the Red Sox this past offseason in a deal that sent Wade Miley to Seattle.

He pitched just 2.2 innings for Boston, posting a 0.00 ERA and 1.125 WHIP. After posting a 1.014 WHIP over 70 innings and striking out 11.8 batters per nine innings last season for the Mariners, he was expected to play a critical eighth-inning role for the Red Sox bullpen this season.
