Cars Damaged By Debris Falling From Somerville Construction Site

BOSTON (CBS) – Several cars were damaged overnight in Somerville by debris falling near Interstate 93.

State Police were called to the area of Mystic Ave. and McGrath Highway near the I-93 overpass just before midnight on Wednesday.

Responding troopers found that debris, mostly soot and cement, had fallen onto several cars from a construction site above.

Police said the debris was not from the overpass or pre-existing infrastructure.

Four vehicles were damaged by the falling debris.

Somerville resident Mohammed Hossain's car endured the most damage from the debris.

"It's a safety hazard, they should be more careful," Hossain said.

No one was injured by the falling debris. The cars and fallen debris were cleaned up by the construction crew.

Thursday morning officials updated that the cause was a street sweeper that dislodged rubber debris from a bridge expansion joint.
