Marathon Bombing Hero Carlos Arredondo Inspired By Pope's Immigration Talk

BOSTON (CBS) - The pope addressed immigration in his very first remarks at the White House Wednesday, a topic that was very personal to one of the most recognizable heroes from the Boston Marathon bombing.

Carlos Arredondo was on the south lawn of the White House with a group from Sacred Heart Church in Roslindale. Arredondo, photographed rushing to the aid of bombing survivor Jeff Bauman during the 2013 attack, hails from Costa Rica.

"[The Pope] said, 'I'm a son of an immigrant family,' and that impacted many people because there's a lot of immigration issues that we have in this country," Arredondo recalls.

Arredondo found the message to have broad significance.

"It was clear that his message was for all of us," Arredondo said. "We hope we can continue to listen to his words and that they guide us to a better life, better future, and for us to find better ways to help each other."
