Carl Stevens' Journal: A Poem For Opening Day At Fenway Park

Mow the grass that grows in your heart.
It's time for baseball season to start.
The winter that wasn't has gone away.
Grab your jacket, it's Opening Day.
Start to sweat off that February fat,
Celebrate the tulip of a baseball bat,
Join the party, be a part of the scene,
Add your own color to Fenway's green.
To the past few months, we say sayonara,
And happily greet Dustin Pedroia
And the team's got an ace, which I is think is quite nice,
So let's rise together and cheer David Price.
Hannigan, Swihart, Hanley, Chris Young,
Get out to the ballpark and have some fun.
Porcello, Shaw, Brock Holt and Joe Kelly,
Pablo Sandoval and his belly,
Bradley and Buckholtz, Bogaerts and Betts
Expanded concessions and wider nets.
We start with high hopes and large expectations,
As we greet a new year in Red Sox nation.
And the smiling DH who holds this year's keys
Is none other than David Ortiz.
All season long we will hail Big Papi,
I'll personally cheer even if he plays crappy.
He brought so much joy to that little green park,
He turned on the light in a field of dark.
Giving us memories that will forever last.
As we acknowledge the present, we celebrate the past.
As the team takes the field, rise with pride,
and say to Ortiz "thanks a lot for the ride."
Enjoy Opening Day on that field of dreams
And cheer history's player on history's team.
