Car Crashes Into Norton Reservoir

NORTON (CBS) -- A car plunged into the Norton Reservoir on Thursday, but emergency crews got both the car and the driver out safely.

At about 11:30 a.m., Norton resident Christopher Cantwell, 51, was driving along Mansfield Avenue when his car entered flew into water near Smith Street, travelling about 100 feet into the reservoir.

Cantwell was able to escape the sinking car, and police and firefighters hauled both it and him to the shore.

Emergency crews hauled the car to the reservoir's shore Thursday. (WBZ-TV)

Cantwell was taken to the hospital to be treated for exposure to the cold water. He did not report any other injuries.

Norton firefighters say the car was removed from the reservoir without any signs of environmental damage. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
