Car Found In Fatal Lowell Hit And Run

LOWELL (CBS) — Lowell Police have found the car that struck and killed a man late Wednesday night, but they're still searching for the driver.

The victim, identified as 86-year-old Elmer Mortensen, was walking with a cane when he was hit while crossing Westford Street just before 11 p.m.

The driver stopped, got out of his car to see Mortensen, who was bleeding from the head, but then drove off, witnesses told WBZ-TV.

"He was hiding his face like he was nervous or something," witness Sam Sapilak said of the driver.

Police had a detailed description of the vehicle, including the license plate number.

They found the blue Volkswagen hatchback early Thursday morning about three miles from the scene.  The windshield was shattered.

Police have identified the owner, but there have been no arrests at this point in the investigation.
