Car Ends Up In Charles River After Crash
CAMBRIDGE (CBS) – A car ended up in the Charles River early Monday morning after a mistake by the driver.
Two vehicles crashed around 1 a.m. on Memorial Drive. One of the cars ended up near the river, but the driver made a crucial error.
"The occupant stepped out of the car, never engaged the brake in any way and the car went into the river," Cambridge Deputy Fire Chief Sean White told WBZ-TV.
Police say a Hyundai going east on Memorial Drive and a Ford Explorer going north toward Cambridge crashed when the driver of the Explorer blew through a stop light. The Hyundai ended up near the river, and the driver jumped out because it was smoking but did not put the car in park.
No one was inside the car when it rolled away.
The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Beth Israel with minor injuries, and the driver of the Explorer was not injured. The driver of the Explorer will be cited for failure to stop, police say.
The fire department and divers were able to pull the car out of the river.
