Canton Teen Run Over By Own Jeep Dies

CANTON (CBS) – A Canton teenager died after he was involved in a freak accident while behind the wheel of a Jeep in front of his house.

Sixteen-year-old Paul O'Brien, a Canton High School sophomore, was critically injured Friday after apparently putting the Jeep in reverse by accident.

Police say the driver's side door was still open as the Jeep began to move. The teen partially fell from the vehicle and was run over.

On Saturday, Canton Police confirmed that O'Brien died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the crash.

Police said on Friday it appeared the incident was a "traffic accident."

Canton High School opened at 9 a.m. as police, grief counselors and school staff were available to help grieving students.

"This is a difficult time for our Canton family. Please do not hesitate to reach out for support if needed.  I ask you to join with me as we all come together for this student, his family and our own Canton family," Interim Superintendent Jennifer Henderson said in a statement.

The O'Brien family requested that students not go to their home as they mourn the teen's death.
