Man Suspected In Belmont Stabbing Crashes Following Police Pursuit Into Cambridge

BELMONT (CBS) - An unidentified man is in custody after police say he stabbed a woman in Belmont Wednesday morning. Neighbors first heard the screams for help and looked to see a violent struggle at the edge of a driveway on Partridge Lane.

The Middlesex District Attorney says it was a domestic assault, the unidentified woman was stabbed by a man she knew. "I saw the woman on the ground, the guy was basically on top and struggling then he tried to run away," said neighbor Zhijie Sui. He says he first saw the man chase the woman around a parked vehicle and then down the driveway, unaware at the time he was armed with a knife.

Police checked the car for evidence throughout the morning and eventually towed it away.

Nearby construction workers ran to help the victim as they yelled to call police. Neighbors say one of the men took off his shirt and held it to the victim's neck to stop the bleeding. "Not only did they have the potential to save the lady's life, but were brave enough to approach the guy who had a weapon I didn't see," said Sui.

Evidence markers lined the area where investigators say the victim was stabbed after some sort of fight with the man who quickly drove away from the scene and was pursued by police through Arlington and into Cambridge where he crashed his vehicle and was taken into custody.

The victim, who neighbors say worked for the Belmont homeowner, remains hospitalized but was conscious at the scene as helped to the ambulance.

"I wouldn't say the injuries were life threatening. She was able to stand up by herself holding her neck," said Sui.

The suspect was also hospitalized after the crash. It's not yet clear what charges he may face.
