Bruins Assign Matt Irwin To Providence

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Bruins have assigned defenseman Matt Irwin to Providence, the team announced on Monday.

The move was announced just before Boston's matinee against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the TD Garden.

The 27-year-old Irwin was a minus-five in the first two games of the season, and many fans will remember his turnover on opening night against the Winnipeg Jets that led to Blake Wheeler's second period goal to put Winnipeg up 2-1 at the time. Boston dropped that game 6-2, with Irwin finishing a minus-three for the contest.

Boston's struggling blue line will get some help back on Monday, as captain Zdeno Chara will make his season debut after missing the first two games with an upper body injury.
