Driver Charged In Brockton Hit And Run That Killed Woman

BROCKTON (CBS) – Brockton police have arrested and charged a driver in a hit and run that killed a woman Tuesday night. They said a black Chevy Tahoe struck 55-year-old Michelle Maxwell just before 9 p.m. on Centre Street near Brockton Hospital and took off. She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

"She lived a life that touched many people and she was full of joy," her husband, Rob Maxwell said at a vigil Wednesday night.

The Plymouth District Attorney's office said Wednesday morning that 57-year-old Allen Perkins was charged with leaving the scene of personal injury and death.

Perkins walked into the Brockton Police Department around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night and said he had gone out to pick up food and believed he struck a traffic cone, and went back home without picking up the meal.

Investigators said Perkins then searched online and found information about the crash. Perkins allegedly moved his SUV from his home to a nearby parking lot before going to police. It was later found.

Perkins was arraigned Wednesday in Brockton District Court. He pleaded not guilty and was held on $2,500 cash bail and must wear a GPS monitor if he makes bail.

Perkins served nearly 15 years in prison for manslaughter after shooting a man to death in 1990.

"Things just don't add up," Rob Maxwell said. "All I know is that God will judge and he will provide justice."

John Thorne lives above The Wizards Duel, a card shop near where the crash occurred. He saw the aftermath, and said it is a dangerous road.

In 2017, a father and son leaving a Pokemon tournament at Thorne's shop when they were hit on Centre Street. The father did not survive.

"I know it says slow down on the poles and stuff. But it's an awful long straight stretch of road. So there's an awful lot of misuse of it by people racing and going too fast," said Thorne. "I hope they come up with a solution for it because it's repeating itself. And nobody wants that."
