Driver Hurt, Charged After Car Crashes Into Webster Bank In Brockton

BROCKTON (CBS) – A driver who was seriously hurt after he crashed his car into a bank in Brockton is now facing charges.

Police say 51-year-old Robert Morano was speeding down Oak Street around 2:30 a.m. when he lost control of his Hyundai.  It hit a curb and went airborne. The car landed on the sidewalk, took out a light pole and two parking signs before crashing into Webster Bank and flipping over on its roof.

"It appears he hit the building at a pretty good clip," said Brockton Fire Captain Richard Costa.

Morano, who was alone in the Hyundai, had to be pulled out of the wreck by firefighters. He was alert and rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton with what was described as chest trauma.  He was later airlifted to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. There's no word yet on his condition.

The car was pulled out and towed away. It left a gaping hole in the bank.

Costa said there is structural damage to the building and it had to be stabilized.

Police found a loaded gun in the bank. Morano's license to carry is expired.

Morano was summonsed on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, carrying a firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, intoxicated licensee carrying a firearm and destruction of property.

"It's just a dangerous street and its been a dangerous street all these years and it's not going to stop," said Brockton resident Jesus Vega. "I'm not sure what it takes to do something about this road. It's just frustrating and very sad."
