Man Dies After Being Pulled From Water At Breakheart Reservation

SAUGUS (CBS) -- A 20-year-old man has died after he was pulled from the water at Breakheart Reservation on Wednesday evening, Massachusetts State Police confirmed.

State Police were called to the state park in Saugus when a swimmer was reported missing just before 5 p.m. Multiple dive teams were seen in the park's Silver Lake and within the hour a young man was found, alive but unconscious, in the water.

First responders were seen giving chest compressions to the man. He was then transported to MelroseWakefield Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Michael McDaniel of Lynn said he has been coming to Breakheart Reservation for years and parts of the lake can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers.

"There's a lot of weeds, a lot of undergrowth," he explained. "I know in the beach they have lifeguards and it's safe there but when you go in the upper lakes --there's two lakes, there's the upper lake and lower lake -- people seem to go in the back way and go to the upper lake and there's no one there to see you so if you get in trouble and drown there's no one there."

According to the District Attorney's Office, the man had been trying to swim to an island in the lake with this two cousins. He began to struggle halfway there and went under. He had been living with his cousin in Lynn.

It is unclear if the swimmer was in the lake staffed with lifeguards. No other information is available at this time.
