Brass Doors Stolen From Mausoleums In Brockton Cemetery

BROCKTON (CBS) - It was no Halloween hoax.

Some grave robbers actually went to the Union Cemetery in Brockton and stole the heavy brass doors off five mausoleums Wednesday night.

The doors appeared to be ripped right off the hinges. The city boarded them back up as a temporary fix.

The thieves most likely stole the brass doors and decorations to sell as scrap metal.

Police are asking metal dealers to keep an eye out for the doors and the thieves.

Amy Winston and Tracy Silva were on their usual walk through the cemetery Friday morning when they come across the disturbing and disrespectful sight.

"It's extremely low," said Silva, who often walks through the area. "To disturb the dead, this is a peaceful place."

The graves and mausoleums date back to the 1800's.

"I've heard of, you know, folks doing grave robbing years, centuries ago, probably, but, you know, you hear stories of it, but it's sad," said Winston.

"The economy is crazy, I guess there must be some value in it, but that's, that's mean."

The city will have to decide how to permanently reseal these tombs.

Anyone with information should contact Brockton Police at (508) 941-0200.
