Driver grazed by bullet in apparent road rage shooting in Braintree

BRAINTREE - A possible case of road rage led to shots being fired on I-93 in Braintree on Wednesday afternoon. State police say a driver on the opposite side of the highway was grazed by a bullet and he was not the intended target.

Police are searching for the gunman after the shooting that brought traffic to a crawl on the busy highway at about 3 p.m.

Witnesses heard several gunshots and then saw a car speeding away. "I heard the first pop. I looked up there was just traffic you really couldn't see anything, and then I heard the second, third and fourth," said David Hickey.

Deandre Montgomery told WBZ he was in a hotel parking lot next to the highway when he heard the shooting. "I heard five, six gunshots go off right here on the highway," Montgomery said. He said he saw a black sedan almost lose control on the exit ramp after the shooting.

Police say the driver of a white pickup truck who pulled over in the median on the southbound side was an innocent victim in the middle of a road rage incident between two other vehicles on the northbound side.

They say an occupant of one of those cars fired a round, which struck the pickup. The driver was grazed when a bullet hit his door.

"I saw the one gentleman from the truck looking at his door and inspecting his door and I said those were gunshots," Hickey said.

Police say the driver refused medical attention as officers continued working the scene. Police are searching for the other vehicles involved and investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
