David Letterman has announced that he is stepping down in 2015 and the blogosphere is awash with Top 10 lists of potential replacements. Candidates include Chelsea Handler, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, and even Jay Leno.

The combination of skill sets needed to thrive in Letterman's seat leaves most applicants wanting. There is more to the job than just being funny. David Letterman and the best of his ilk have the ability to be funny while helping a guest shine. The tendency for rookies is to inject either too much or too little of their own personality into a segment with a guest and chemistry suffers as a result. A host has to instinctively supply just the right amount of oxygen and space for the guest to really pop.
